MUMBAI – The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for January at 2.2 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X. The quota for next month is unchanged from the December quota, but over 2% lower than the quota for January 2025.
The sales quota for January is in line with market expectations. Market participants had told Informist the sugar sales quota for next month would be 2.2-2.3 million tonnes, as demand is expected to improve, with festivals such as Makar Sankranti and Pongal and the wedding season.
Prices of the sweetener are likely to be range-bound in January because of ample availability with the crushing season in full swing. "In Maharashtra, prices are likely to be in the range of INR 3,600-INR 3,700 per 100 kg. In Uttar Pradesh, prices will be around INR 4,100 per 100 kg," said G.K. Sood, chairman of MEIR Commodities.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets monthly sales quotas for each sugar mill. The government has estimated gross sugar production for the sugar season 2025-26 (Oct–Sept) at 34 million tonnes. End
