MUMBAI – Futures contracts of spices rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Friday. Prices of turmeric rose due to low arrivals and robust export demand, analysts said. Prices of jeera and coriander also rose due to firm demand and reports of a fall in acreage in the ongoing rabi season, they said.
The most-active April contract of TURMERIC rose 2.4% to INR 17,102 per 100 kilograms as market arrivals continue to stay below normal and both domestic and export demand remain firm, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Market sentiment is likely to stay bullish until the new crop begins arriving in markets, expected by the end of January, analysts at SMC Global Securities said.
Though higher acreage and the current supportive weather conditions suggest that production should be better than last year, localised weather and disease risks remain, keeping the crop near normal levels rather than exceptional, Kedia Adisory said. Quality issues in Maharashtra, where the crop has been infested with rot or aflatoxin, may boost prices in the upper levels, it said.
The most-active January contract of JEERA was up 3.1% at INR 22,550 per 100 kg, supported by strong export demand and a sharp decline in acreage across the country. Jeera acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, fell to 354,169 hectares from 442,238 hectares a year ago as of Monday, data from the state agriculture department showed. This marks one of the slowest sowing seasons in recent years due to uneven rainfall and unprepared fields, Kedia Advisory said. Low arrivals in Unjha, Gujarat, further supported prices, it said.
The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was up 1.7% at INR 10,546 per 100 kg due to robust seasonal demand and reports of a fall in acreage in the ongoing sowing season, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, coriander acreage was 112,333 hectares as of Monday, down from 120,512 hectares a year ago.
