Andhra Pradesh rabi acreage up 9% YoY at 1.01 mn ha as on Wed

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Andhra Pradesh was 1.01 million hectares as on Wednesday, up over 9% from 922,000 hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture government. Of the targetted area of 1.94 million hectares for the ongoing rabi season, nearly 52% has been covered so far, the data showed.

 

The area sown with chana fell to 267,000 hectares from 273,000 hectares a year ago, according to the data. The area under urad rose to 151,000 hectares from 133,000 hectares, while moong acreage rose to 26,000 hectares from 20,000 hectares. The total area under all pulses so far was 488,000 hectares, down from 511,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The acreage of paddy was up at 224,000 hectares from 172,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage rose to 161,000 hectares from 76,000 hectares. The area under jowar fell to 44,000 hectares from 46,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area under all oilseeds fell to 34,000 hectares from 37,000 hectares a year ago, according to the data. Under oilseeds, the acreage of groundnut was down at 26,000 hectares from 32,000 hectares a year ago. 

 

Tobacco acreage in the state so far fell to 50,000 hectares from 76,000 hectares a year ago.

 

Rabi paddy is at the 'nursery to transplantation' stage, according to the report. Tobacco is at the vegetative stage, while jowar is at the grain filling stage. Chana and urad are at the 'planting to emergence and flowering' stage, as per the report. Maize is at the 'vegetative to tasseling' stage, while groundnut is at the 'emergence to flowering and peg formation' stage.

 

Kharif paddy, jowar, bajra, ragi, castor, sugarcane, and groundnut are at the harvesting stage, the report said. Tur is at the pod development stage, while cotton is at the third picking stage.

 

From Oct. 1 to Dec. 24, the state has recorded 344 millimetres of rainfall during the ongoing northeast monsoon season, which is 21% above the normal for the period, the report showed. The water level in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh was 79.73% of the live storage capacity as of Friday, compared to 73.94% a year ago, according to data from the state's water resources department.  End
