MUMBAI – Prices of wheat were mixed in the key spot markets across the country Wednesday, traders said. Prices of maize fell in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, after Sri Lanka halted the imports of the commodity, they said. Traders expect prices of wheat to fall in the near term due to weak demand. Prices of rice remained steady in the key spot markets with no fresh cues, they said.

WHEAT prices in Indore, rose by INR 15 to INR 2,740 per 100 kilograms due to firm demand in the market, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader said. Prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,450-INR 2,500 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. "Usually during the end of the year, farmers bring less crop to the market," he said. Prices were stable due to low market activity, he said. "There is no demand anywhere, especially in south India," he said. South India accounts for around 50–60% of wheat demand, and is typically the trend-setter in the market, he said.

Prices of wheat are seen falling in the near term as demand is likely to remain low, Mehta said. Prices could be pushed down further if the government begins to offload its stock, he said. Prices of wheat in the wholesale market of Vashi remained steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.

The acreage under wheat, the biggest rabi crop, stood at 30.2 million hectares as of Friday, up 0.4% from 30.0 million hectares in the corresponding period a year ago, according to a release from the agriculture ministry. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India.

The price of sona masoori RICE, a premium non-basmati variety, was steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, said trader Ravi Shankar. Prices are unchanged due to low trade activity in the market, he added.

As of Friday, the acreage under paddy was 1.3 million hectares, an increase of 15% from 1.2 million hectares last year, data from the agriculture department showed.

MAIZE prices in Indore fell by INR 40 per 100 kg to INR 1,845 per 100 kg as Sri Lanka stopped its purchases of maize Tuesday onwards, Kochar said. India is the top exporter of maize to Sri Lanka. In Apr-Oct, India exported 32,541 tonnes of maize to Sri Lanka, up a whopping 6,974% on year, according to the data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. However, the fall in prices could be limited due to a rise in demand from the ethanol sector, he said.  End
