MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and coriander on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange fell Wednesday as trader booked profits following a recent surge in prices. Jeera prices also fell, although the decline is likely to be limited amid strong demand for the spice. Prices of turmeric are likely to rise over concerns of crop damage, while prices of jeera and coriander could be supported by lower acreage in the ongoing rabi season, analysts said.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC fell 2.2% to INR 16,450 per 100 kg due to profit booking as prices surged beyond the INR 16,000-per-100 kg mark this week, analysts said. Prices also fell due to higher acreage of the spice than last year. Turmeric acreage is estimated at 302,000 hectares, up 4% on year, Kedia Advisory said.

However, localised weather and disease risks may restrict production, keeping the crop near normal levels rather than exceptional, supporting prices in the near term, Kedia Advisory said. Quality issues in Maharashtra, where the crop has been infested with rot or aflatoxin, may boost prices in the upper levels, it said.

The most-active January contract of JEERA was down 0.3% at INR 21,750 per 100 kg as prices corrected after surging to INR 22,000 per 100 kg earlier in the week, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. However, the fall in prices is likely to be limited due to robust demand and a fall in acreage in the ongoing rabi season, the brokerage said. Jeera acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, fell to 354,169 hectares from 442,238 hectares a year ago as of Monday, data from the state agriculture department showed. Prices were also supported by a marginal rise in export demand from West Asian countries and China, though those markets still remain highly price-sensitive, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was down 1.3% at INR 10,356 per 100 kg due to profit-booking as prices crossed the INR 10,000-per-100 kg treshold again this week, analysts said. The fall in prices is likely to be limited due to reports of a fall in acreage in the ongoing rabi season and because of firm export demand, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, coriander acreage fell to 112,333 hectares from 120,512 hectares a year ago.
