MUMBAI – India's mustard acreage is estimated at 8.47 million hectares for the 2025-26 rabi season, about 4% higher than last year, with major states such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and West Bengal showing significant expansion, the Solvent Extractors Association said in a report. This is the association's third report of the mustard crop monitoring study for 2025–26, prepared by Agriwatch, which provides an updated and comprehensive analysis of the mustard sowing progress and crop conditions as on Dec. 15.

 

Mustard sowing in Rajasthan was completed on time, but excess rainfall in September and October affected early-sown crops, necessitating some re-sowing in low-lying areas, the report said. "Over the past 30-35 days, clear weather and favourable soil moisture and temperatures supported smooth crop recovery," the report said. As on Dec. 15, mustard acreage in Rajasthan is seen at 3.4 million hectares, slightly up from 3.37 million hectares reported in the same time last year, as per the survey.

 

In Uttar Pradesh, mustard sowing progressed well despite unseasonal rainfall in October, which affected germination in some districts. "Dry and favourable conditions through November and the first fortnight of December allowed the crop to recover. Currently, the crop is 45-60 days old, mostly at flowering to pod formation, with early-sown and short duration varieties advancing to pod development and seed formation," according to the report. Mustard acreage in the state as on Dec. 15 is seen at 1.35 million hectares up from 1.27 million hectares a year ago.

 

In Madhya Pradesh, the crop faced stress in late October due to unseasonal and excess rainfall, particularly in low-lying areas. The crop is now 50-60 days old, at the peak flowering to pod formation stage, it said. As on Dec. 15, mustard acreage in Madhya Pradesh is seen at 1.1 million hectares, slightly up from 1.0 million hectares the same time last year, as per the survey.

 

In West Bengal, the mustard crop sowing has progressed steadily, while in Assam sowing has been completed, with the crop now 20-35 days old. In Gujarat, the crop is 45-60 days old at the flowering to pod formation stage. Mustard sowiing in Bihar was timely, aided by adequate rainfall in early October, and the crop is now 35-50 days old at the branching to flowering initiation stage, according to the survey.

 

Overall condition of the mustard crop is normal across all monitored states and the sucking pest incidences remain below economic threshold levels, it said. No rainfall was recorded during the first fortnight of December, and favourable temperatures, adequate soil moisture, and irrigation support aided crop growth and development, according to the report.  End
