Rajasthan rabi acreage up 3% on year at 11.79 mln ha as on Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Rajasthan stood at 11.79 million hectares as on Monday, up nearly 3% from 11.49 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The target area set for this year is 12.02 million hectares, of which over 98% has been covered so far, the report showed.
The acreage of wheat was 3.52 million hectares, down from 3.84 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under barley was 445,234 hectares, up from 330,000 hectares. The total area under all cereals slipped to 3.96 million hectares from 4.17 million hectares a year ago.
Chana acreage in the state rose to 2.24 million hectares from 1.66 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area sown with all rabi pulses was 2.27 million hectares, up from 1.69 million hectares a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds was 3.57 million hectares, slightly higher than 3.50 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of mustard was up at 3.42 million hectares, against 3.37 million hectares a year ago.
Rabi crops are sown in Oct-Nov after the monsoon rains are over and harvested between April and May. Barley, wheat, gram or desi chana, and oilseeds such as rapeseed and mustard are the key crops grown in the state during the rabi season. The normal rabi acreage, which is the average of the last five years, is 11.25 million hectares. End
