Maharashtra rabi acreage down 4% on yr at 5.30 mln ha as on Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Maharashtra stood at 5.30 million hectares as on Monday, down over 4% from 5.54 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's normal rabi acreage, which is the average area sown during the last five years, is 5.78 million hectares.
The area sown with wheat rose to 1.04 million hectares from 1.02 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under jowar fell to 1.20 million hectares from 1.42 million hectares, while the area under maize rose to 463,978 hectares from 390,942 hectares.
Chana acreage was 2.42 million hectares, down from 2.53 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area under all pulses fell to 2.55 million hectares from 2.65 million hectares.
The total area sown with all oilseeds was 39,330 hectares, down from 50,501 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of safflower fell to 24,117 hectares from 30,603 hectares.
Rabi crops in the state are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April. Besides chana, other major rabi crops grown in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard, and peas.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 86.6% of the live storage capacity as of Tuesday, compared with 79.5% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
