Gujarat rabi acreage down 5% on year at 4.12 mln ha as on Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Gujarat stood at 4.12 million hectares as on Monday, down nearly 5% from 4.33 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal area under rabi crops, which is the average of the last three years, is 4.64 million hectares, of which nearly 89% has been covered so far.

 

Wheat acreage in the state was up at 1.22 million hectares from nearly 1.20 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage of maize slipped to 124,079 hectares from 125,793 hectares. The total acreage of all cereal crops was 1.37 million hectares, up from 1.35 million hectares.

 

The area sown with chana fell to 764,077 hectares from 787,458 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area under all rabi pulses so far was 810,521 hectares, down from 854,831 hectares.

 

The total area under all oilseeds in the state was 277,282 hectares, up from 251,223 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the area under mustard rose to 276,231 hectares from 249,290 hectares.

 

Sugarcane acreage so far was down at 129,782 hectares from 154,337 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under tobacco was 145,987 hectares, up from 139,590 hectares a year ago. Cumin acreage fell to 354,169 hectares from 442,238 hectares a year ago, and the area under coriander was also down at 112,333 hectares from 120,512 hectares.

 

The area under onion in the state fell to 63,634 hectares from 82,238 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage of potato rose to 163,826 hectares from 152,741 hectares. The area sown with vegetables was 161,892 hectares, down from 178,390 hectares. 

 

Rabi crops are sown between October and November, after the monsoon is over, and harvested between April and May. Wheat, barley, peas, gram or chana, and mustard are the major rabi crops grown in Gujarat.  End
