Rabi acreage rises 1.4% YoY to 58.1 mln ha; wheat area a tad up

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops across India was 58.1 million hectares as of Friday, up 1.4% from 57.3 million hectares a year ago, according to a release from the agriculture ministry Monday. The acreage under wheat, the biggest rabi crop, stood at 30.2 million hectares, up 0.4% from 30.0 million hectares in the corresponding period a year ago. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India.

 

The acreage under paddy was 1.3 million hectares, an increase of 15% from 1.2 million hectares last year. The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, stood at 4.6 million hectares, up 1.3% from 4.5 million hectares a year ago.

 

Within coarse cereals, acreage under jowar, or sorghum, fell to 2.0 million hectares down over 8% from 2.1 million hectares a year ago while maize acreage was up at 1.8 million hectares from 1.7 million hectares. Acreage under ragi, a millet, rose nearly 42% to 68,000 hectares from 48,000 hectares a year ago. 

 

The total area sown under pulses in the rabi season of crop year 2025–26 (Jul-Jun) as of Friday was 12.7 million hectares, up 3% from 12.3 million hectares a year ago. Among key pulses, chana acreage rose nearly 6% to 9.2 million hectares from 8.7 million hectares a year ago and that of masur was nearly unchanged at 1.6 million hectares. Acreage under urad fell to 313,000 hectares from 348,000 hectares a year ago and that under moong fell to 42,000 hectares from 43,000 hectares.

 

The total area under oilseeds was 9.3 million hectares, nearly unchanged from 9.26 million hectares a year ago. Groundnut acreage fell nearly 17% to 236,000 hectares from 283,000 hectares, while acreage under mustard, the largest winter oilseed, rose over over 1% to 8.8 million hectares from 8.7 million hectares a year ago. Sunflower acreage increased nearly 15% to 39,000 hectares from 34,000 hectares, according to the report.
