NEW DELHI – Food Corp. of India's rice procurement so far in 2025-26 (Oct-Sep) has risen over 9% on year to 28.35 million tonnes, supported by strong purchases in Telangana and Haryana, according to FCI data accessed by Informist. The rice purchases so far account for 61% of the season's procurement target of 46.35 million tonnes.
The government procures paddy from farmers at minimum support prices, gets it custom-milled from designated mills, and stores the rice in the central pool. The government's paddy procurement so far stands at 42.26 million tonnes, up from 38.72 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year, according to the data.
While procurement operations in major paddy-growing states such as Punjab and Haryana concluded last month, they are ongoing in Telangana and Chhattisgarh, among others.
In Chhattisgarh, rice purchases are nearly 21% lower on year at 2.9 million tonnes. This accounts for 40% of the target of 7.3 million tonnes to be procured by the end of January, the data showed. Procurement operations began on Nov. 1 and are expected to gather pace in the coming weeks, an FCI official said.
Meanwhile, Telangana's rice purchases are nearly 31% higher on year at 3.5 million tonnes. The state has so far achieved approximately 97% of the 3.6 million-tonne target. Procurement activities started in October and will continue till mid-February, the official said.
Despite advancing procurement operations by two weeks to mid-September, Punjab's rice purchases declined nearly 10% on year and fell short of the procurement target. The state concluded kharif rice procurement at 10.48 million tonnes on Nov. 30, meeting over 90% of the 11.60 million tonnes target. Last year, the state purchased 11.61 million tonnes of rice.
Meanwhile, Haryana, another major rice producer, closed kharif procurement operations in mid-October after recording a nearly 32% year-on-year rise in rice purchases to 4.16 million tonnes, exceeding its 3.60 million tonnes target. Last year, the state bought 3.62 million tonnes of rice. End
