MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets in Uttar Pradesh fell owing to sluggish demand but prices in Maharashtra were steady, traders said. They expect prices to stabilise at the current levels.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 25-INR 30 per 100 kg because demand is poor, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from the northern state. Prices in the resales market, too, fell by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg as demand from bulk consumers of sugar, such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, is limited, he said. Demand picked up slightly after the cut in prices, he added. Rates of the sweetener are likely to stabilise at these levels as prices have already fallen by more than INR 100 per 100 kg during the month, Gupta said.

In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady Monday after having cut them by INR 10 per 100 kg Friday, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary at the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to remain at these levels for the rest of the month, he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 25-INR 30 at INR 3,800-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 25-INR 30 at INR 3,820-INR 3,980 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,860-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,765-INR 3,850 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1952 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 1.2% at 14.99 cents per pound. Sugar prices rose, tracking gains in crude oil prices on NYMEX. A rise in crude oil prices leads to greater diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, reducing the availability of sugar.  End
