MUMBAI – Prices of maize remained unchanged and those of wheat and rice showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of maize were flat as steady demand for the grain was on a par with its supply, they said. Prices of wheat rose slightly in Kota, Rajasthan, on lower arrivals and they remained unchanged in others due to low market activity, they said. Prices of the 1401 basmati variety fell in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, on low demand and those of other basmati varieties and non-basmati rice stayed flat, they said.

WHEAT prices in Kota, rose slightly by INR 10 per 100 kg to INR 2,450-INR 2,500 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Farmers are choosing to bring in their freshly harvested crop of paddy and maize over their old stocks of wheat, he said.

Prices of wheat in the wholesale market of Vashi remained steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices are steady due to tepid market activity, he said. "Business is very slow," he added. Prices are likely to remain largely steady in the near term unless the government makes some policy changes regarding wheat exports, he said. The market has been calling for exports of wheat to be opened for a while now, he said.

Rising hope that the government could allow wheat exports have supported the rise in wheat acreage, which "could hit a record high", in the ongoing rabi season, Vora said. The government's robust procurement of the grain is also supporting the rise in wheat acreage, he said. As of Dec. 12, wheat acreage stood at 27.6 million hectares, up 6.6% from 25.8 million hectares in the corresponding period a year ago, data from the agriculture ministry showed.

Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were largely steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. "Market is stable with demand being stable," he said.

MAIZE prices in Indore were unchanged at INR 1,825 per 100 kg as demand for the grain matched its supply, Kochar said. Prices at Davanagere in Karnataka were also steady at INR 1,900-INR 1,950 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. Prices remained flat in Karnataka due to low demand, Kumar said. "There was no business today, demand was not there," he said.

Prices of major RICE varieties were largely unchanged in key spot markets, traders said. In Vashi, prices of the 1401 basmati variety fell by INR 100 from Friday to INR 7,100-INR 7,300 per 100 kg while that of the 1121 variety was unchanged at INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, Vora said. "The only price movement happening in rice is in basmati because there is at least some demand fluctuation there," he said. Demand for non-basmati rice varieties is much more lukewarm, he said. Prices of rice are likely to remain range-bound in the near term, he said.

The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, said trader Ravi Shankar. Prices are unchanged due to low trade in the market owing to no demand, he added.  End
