NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric fell while those of jeera and coriander rose on the National Commodities and Derivatives Exchange on Friday. Turmeric prices fell on expectations of higher acreage and jeera and coriander prices rose on reports of a fall in acreage amid steady demand, analysts said.
The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 2.4% at INR 15,624 per 100 kilogram, weighed down by expectations of higher acreage amid favourable rains during the ongoing sowing season, Kedia advisory said. The fall is likely to be limited due to below-normal arrivals amid strong demand. Moreover, arrivals of the new spice crop are expected to remain delayed until Feb-Mar, while carry-forward stocks are at record-low levels relative to historical averages, which will keep prices high, the brokerage said.
The most-active January contract of JEERA was up 0.1% at INR 21,160 per 100 kg due to a fall in acreage in the ongoing sowing season and consistent demand, SMC Global said. Weather-related delays and uneven rainfall continue to hinder sowing in the ongoing rabi season, providing near-term support to prices, Kedia Advisory said. However, upside remains capped due to comfortable supply and subdued export demand, with most overseas demand met from existing stocks, the brokerage said.
The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was up 0.8% at INR 10,066 per 100 kg on reports of lower sowing coverage. Farmers are reportedly shifting acreage to more profitable crops like wheat and chana, keeping overall coverage lower this season, SMC said. However, the brokerage sees the contract trading "sideways" owing to subdued demand at prevailing high price levels.
