MUMBAI – Prices of wheat, maize, and rice were steady in key spot markets of the country Friday due to lack of fresh cues. Prices of maize are likely to remain stable in the near term due to subdued demand, traders said. Production of wheat in the coming marketing season is expected to rise due to higher acreage and improved yield, they said.

WHEAT prices were steady at INR 2,450-INR 2,490 per 100 kg in Kota, Rajasthan, due to lack of fresh cues, Ravi Mehta, a local trader, said. Arrivals were steady at 4,000-4,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were largely steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Prices are likely to move in a range of INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg in the short term, depending on demand, he said. Prices of wheat in the wholesale market of Vashi in Navi Mumbai remained steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.

India's wheat output in the coming marketing year is expected to rise by at least 5 million tonnes due to higher acreage and improved yields. This could raise the risk of a glut, which could push prices below the minimum support price and force the government to sharply step up procurement and consider opening up exports, traders and analysts told Informist.

Industry participants see wheat production in the crop year 2025–26 (Jul–Jun) crossing 122 million tonnes, compared with 117.5 million tonnes in the previous year. This is at a time when private trade already holds large stocks and demand from mills remains subdued, limiting the industry's ability to absorb fresh arrivals once harvesting begins.

MAIZE prices in Indore remained stable at INR 1,825 per 100 kg, with no fresh cues, Kochar said. Prices at Davangere in Karnataka were also steady at INR 1,900-INR 1,950 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. Arrivals in Karnataka rose by 2,000 bags to 5,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said. "Arrivals rose as farmers wanted to sell the grain before the weekend and Christmas holiday," he said. Prices are likely to remain steady in the near term because there is very low demand in the market, he said.

Prices of major RICE varieties remained unchanged in key spot markets, traders said. In Vashi, prices of the 1401 and 1121 basmati varieties were steady at INR 7,200-INR 7,400 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, said trader Ravi Shankar. Prices are likely to remain steady in the near term, he added.  End
