--Govt source: Minister Goyal to visit EU for FTA talks Jan 8-9

NEW DELHI – Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal will visit the European Union Jan. 8-9 to discuss the proposed free trade agreement with the block, a top commerce ministry official said Friday. Goyal's visit assumes significance as the FTA talks are nearing a conclusion.

The two sides had set the target to conclude the negotiations by December end. While the talks are unlikely to conclude by the end of this month, both the sides have made strong progress and have concluded several chapters under the free trade agreement.

On Monday, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal had said that now the most difficult issues are left on the negotiation table. While Agrawal did not specify which are these issues, the EU's proposal of Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism has been a major point of contention between the two parties. Agrawal had also said that New Delhi, if needed, may drop some issues under the FTA to close the deal. But there is no decision on dropping any issue so far, Agrawal had added.

Meanwhile, the EU has announced collection of tax, based on the carbon content in the imports into the region, from Jan. 1. But New Delhi is hopeful that the EU would defer the levy, as it has earlier.

There is strong expectation of an announcement on FTA conclusion with the EU during European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's visit in New Delhi in January. The EU leader has been invited as the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations on Jan. 26.  End
