Maharashtra rabi acreage dn 0.1% on yr at 4.97 mln ha as on Tue

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Maharashtra stood at 4.97 million hectares as on Tuesday, down nearly 0.1% from 4.98 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's normal rabi acreage for this period, which is the average area sown during the last five years, is 5.78 million hectares. 

 

The area under wheat rose to 923,810 hectares from 839,585 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under jowar fell to 1.16 million hectares from 1.35 million hectares, while the area sown with maize rose to 429,312 from 345,925 hectares. 

 

Chana acreage was 2.30 million hectares, up from 2.28 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area under all pulses rose to 2.42 million hectares from 2.39 million hectares a year ago. 

 

The total area sown with all oilseeds was 36,365 hectares, down from 44,670 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of safflower fell to 23,620 hectares from 28,435 hectares. 

 

Rabi crops in the state are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April. Besides chana, other major rabi crops grown in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard, and peas.

 

The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 90.93% of the live storage capacity as of Friday, compared with 86.81% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
