MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell Thursday as demand was sluggish at the existing price levels, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, they said. Prices are likely to fall in Maharashtra due to poor demand, while in Uttar Pradesh, they may stabilise at the current levels, they said.
Some mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 15 per 100 kg due to poor demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Traders in the re-sales markets of the state cut prices by INR 5-INR 10 per 100 kg as there was limited demand from bulk consumers of sugar, such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, Gupta said.
Market participants were of the view that prices in Uttar Pradesh would be range-bound as the sales quota allocation for the state was lower, Gupta said. The Centre has allocated a sales quota of 656,591 tonnes for Uttar Pradesh, which is nearly 11% lower than the quota for November.
Mills in Maharashtra kept the sweetener's prices steady on Thursday, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall by INR 20-INR 30 per 100 kg in the coming days as demand remains weak amid high availability, he said.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 15 at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 15 at INR 3,825-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,960-INR 4,032 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,740-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1817 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 1.2% at 14.58 cents per pound due to ample global availability. In November, Conab, Brazil's crop forecasting agency, had raised its 2025-26 sugar production estimate for Brazil to 45 million tonnes from a previous forecast of 44.5 million tonnes. End
