NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric fell while those of jeera and coriander were up on the National Commodities and Derivatives Exchange Thursday. While turmeric prices fell on profit booking, those of jeera and coriander rose on reports of fall in acreage amid steady demand, analysts said.

At 1647 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 1% at INR 15,980 per 100 kg due to profit-booking as prices had surged above INR 16,000 per 100 kg, according to analysts. Prices had risen on strong seasonal demand amidst tight supplies following last year's smaller crop, SMC Global Securities said in a note. The presence of excessive moisture in the atmosphere has also hampered the preservation of the harvested and stored crop, Kedia Advisory said. Arrivals of the spice are expected to remain delayed till Feb-Mar, while carry-forward stocks are at record-low levels compared with historical averages, keeping supplies tight, the brokerage said.

The most-active January contract of JEERA was up 0.1% at INR 21,205 per 100 kg due to a fall in acreage in the ongoing sowing season and consistent demand, SMC Global said. Weather-related delays and uneven rainfall continue to hinder sowing in the ongoing rabi season, which is likely to provide some support to prices in the near term, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was up 1.1% at INR 10,020 per 100 kg on reports of lower sowing coverage as farmers are reportedly shifting acreage towards more profitable crops like wheat and chana, keeping overall coverage lower this season, SMC said.
