MUMBAI – Prices of most oilseeds were steady across key markets of the country Thursday, traders said. Soybean prices are likely to increase due to costly soyoil imports, which leads to an increase in demand for the former, and groundnut prices are likely to increase as arrivals have started falling, they said.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,225-INR 7,250 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Prices had increased by INR 50 on Tuesday due to higher miller demand and lower arrivals. Mustard seed arrivals nationwide totalled 225,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the same as the previous day, according to GGN Research.

In Kota, mustard seed prices were steady at INR 6,500 per 100 kg due to poor demand at higher rates, Mahesh Sameriya, a trader, said. Arrivals were at 5,000 bags, the same as the previous day, Sameriya added.

SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,600-INR 4,750 per 100 kg, Narendra Porwal, a local trader, said. Arrivals in the market were at 10,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the same as the previous day, he said. In Kota, soybean prices were steady at INR 4,601 per 100 kg, according to Sameriya. Arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 23,000 bags, he said.

However, with imports becoming costlier, millers have little choice but to procure domestic oilseeds for crushing, traders said. According to Sandeep Bajoria, chief executive officer of the Sunvin Group, import contracts for about 70,000 tonnes of crude soybean oil in December and January have been cancelled after prices of imported soyoil rose by INR 2 per litre. Soybean prices in Ratlam had risen by INR 50 Wednesday and by INR 20 in Kota on Tuesday.

Prices of GROUNDNUT in Ratlam were steady at INR 2,700-INR 5,400 per 100 kg after increasing by INR 200 the previous day, Porwal said. Arrivals fell to 14,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), down from 15,000 bags the previous day, he said. Prices are likely to rise as arrivals have begun to fall, traders said. Groundnut arrivals typically peak in October and November.
