MUMBAI – Wheat prices fell in Rajasthan's Kota Thursday due to weak demand, even as they remained steady in other markets, traders said. Prices of maize and rice were steady in key spot markets across the country, they said. Maize prices are likely to remain stable in the near term due to subdued demand.
WHEAT prices fell by INR 30 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,450-INR 2,490 per 100 kg in Kota due to low demand, Ravi Mehta, a local trader, said. Arrivals in the market remained unchanged at 4,000-4,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were largely steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. Prices are likely to move in a range of INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg in the short term, depending on demand, he said.
Prices of the grain in the wholesale market of Vashi in Navi Mumbai remained steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.
MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 1,825 per 100 kg, with no fresh cues, Kochar said. Prices of maize at Davangere in Karnataka were also steady at 1,900-1,950 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. Arrivals in Karnataka were also steady at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said. "Prices are likely to remain steady in the near-term because there is very low demand in the market," he said.
Meanwhile, India's maize production is expected to rise to 50 million tonnes in the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) from an estimated 43 million tonnes in 2024-25, driven by higher productivity, wider adoption of improved seed varieties, and rising demand from the ethanol sector, Indian Institute of Maize Research Director Hanuman Sahay Jat told Informist on Wednesday.
India's maize output rose 15.2% to 43.4 million tonnes in 2024-25. The agriculture ministry has estimated maize production in the kharif season at 28.3 million tonnes, up 14.1% from a year ago. "Over the longer term, production could rise to around 70 million tonnes by 2030 and about 140 million tonnes by 2047," Jat said.
Prices of major RICE varieties remained steady in key markets, traders said. In Vashi, prices for the 1401 and 1121 basmati varieties were steady at INR 7,200-7,400 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain steady in the near term, he added. End
