MUMBAI/NEW DELHI – India's crude oil imports from Russia have fallen so far in December from the last month as major companies such as Reliance Industries Ltd. and other Indian refiners lowered their purchases from Moscow, data from global real-time data and analytics provider Kpler showed. Russian barrels into India are expected to stabilise at lower levels unless there is any material escalation in secondary sanctions, Nikhil Dubey, senior refining analyst at Kpler, told Informist.

On Oct. 23, the US had imposed sanctions on two large oil companies in Russia--Rosneft and Lukoil--to put pressure on Moscow to end the war with Ukraine. These sanctions came into effect Nov. 21.

Russian crude oil inflows into India this month are tracking around 500,000-600,000 barrels per day lower than November, when imports were close to 1.8 million barrels per day. "This reflects a pullback from Reliance, driven by EU compliance considerations around diesel and refined product exports," Dubey said. "Other Indian refiners, including public sector companies and Nayara, are stepping in opportunistically, but their incremental buying is not sufficient to offset the reduction from larger buyers, keeping overall intake softer than previous months," Dubey added.

The country's crude oil imports from Russia this month are at 1.1 million barrels per day as of Thursday, led by Reliance Industries at around 420,958 barrels per day and Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. at around 326,524 barrels per day, according to data from Kpler. Nayara Energy has imported around 275,430 barrel and Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. has imported around 125,422 barrels per day from Russia this month.

"Looking ahead, Russian Urals is likely to remain part of India's crude slate. Russian exporters continue to adapt by working through new intermediaries and alternative trading structures, which should help keep volumes flowing at discounts," Dubey said.  End
