MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady Wednesday as mills in both the places have already cut prices significantly during this month, traders said. In Maharashtra, prices are likely to fall further due to poor demand, but in Uttar Pradesh, prices are likely to stabilise at the current levels, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as sweetener rates in the state are already down by over INR 100 per 100 kg, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. The resales markets in the state, however, cut prices by INR 10 per 100 kg due to poor demand, Gupta said.

Market participants were of the view that prices in Uttar Pradesh would be range bound as the sales quota allocation for the state was lower, but as demand was sluggish, mills cut prices, Gupta said. The Centre has allocated a sales quota of 656,591 tonnes for Uttar Pradesh, which is nearly 11% lower than the quota for November.

In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady after cutting them by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg the previous day due to poor demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are unlikely to rise as demand remains weak and availability high, he said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,825-INR 3,975 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,850-INR 4,025 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,960-INR 4,032 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,740-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2023 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.5% at 14.75 cents per pound due to ample global availability. Conab, Brazil's crop forecasting agency, on Nov. 4 raised its Brazil 2025-26 sugar production estimate to 45 million tonnes from a previous forecast of 44.5 million tonnes.  End
