NEW DELHI – India's yellow pea imports during the first 10 months of 2025 fell sharply, according to data released by the India Pulses and Grains Association. Imports of the legume between January and October plunged 62% year on year to about 940,000 tonnes, compared with 2.5 million tonnes during the same period last year. However, shipments surged more than fourfold to over 214,000 tonnes in October compared to the previous month, ahead of the government's decision to impose a 30% import duty on yellow peas effective Nov. 1, reversing its earlier duty-free regime.
In contrast, chana imports rose sharply during Jan–Oct to around 1.2 million tonnes, up from just 185,000 tonnes a year ago. The rise came despite New Delhi imposing a 10% import duty on chana from Apr. 1. Most of these arrivals were concentrated in Jan–Mar, when imports exceeded 1.1 million tonnes.
Australia accounted for the bulk of chana shipments. The country sows its chana crop between May and July and harvests it between October and November, with shipments to India typically beginning from November.
Meanwhile, masur imports declined marginally by about 4% year on year to nearly 799,000 tonnes during the same period.
At present, chana and masur attract an import duty of 10%, while yellow peas face a higher levy of 30%. These duties are scheduled to remain in force until Mar. 31. End
