MUMBAI – India's natural gas production continued its negative trend in October, falling 5% on year to 2.92 billion cubic meters, according to a report by the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. The decline was driven by a 4% on-year reduction in the offshore gas output, which represented 73% of the total domestic production for the month, along the decreased output from the onshore Rajasthan field. Natural gas production during Jan-Oct declined over 3% on year to 29 billion cubic meters, the intergovernment organisation comprising the world's leading gas exporters said in its report.
Global gas production in October rose nearly 3% on year to 366 billion cubic meters. All gas producing regions, except Asia Pacific and Europe, witnessed positive production variation, with North America, specifically the US, leading the growth. The Asia Pacific region recorded the largest output reduction in October, declining more than 3.3% on year, mainly due to lower output from some major Asian producers, the report said.
India's natural gas consumption in October fell nearly 3% on year to 5.8 billion cubic meters, returning to decline after rising for previous two consecutive months that followed seven straight months of on-year contraction. The fertiliser industry was the largest consumer of natural gas, accounting for 30% of total demand, followed by city gas distribution at 23%.
Aggregate gas consumption in some of the major gas-consuming countries, which account for 75% of the global gas demand, increased nearly 2% on year to reach 2.90 trillion cubic meters in the first 10 months of 2025. The European Union, the UK, and North America recorded growth, while Asia showed decline in consumption, the report said. End
