MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in the key markets of Maharashtra but were steady in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, traders said. In Maharashtra, prices are likely to fall further due to poor demand but in Uttar Pradesh prices are likely to stabilise at the current levels, they said.
Mills in Maharashtra cut prices by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg as demand was sluggish, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are unlikely to rise as demand remains weak and availability high, he said.
In Uttar Pradesh, prices were unchanged as mills had already cut them by over INR 100 per 100 kg this month, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills in central part of the state had raised prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg the previous day, but those in western part of the state had cut prices by INR 5-INR 15 per 100 kg. However, demand was limited in both places, Gupta said.
Market participants were of the view that prices in Uttar Pradesh would be range-bound as the sales quota allocation for the state was lower, but as demand was sluggish, mills cut prices, Gupta said. The Centre has allocated a sales quota of 656,591 tonnes for Uttar Pradesh, which is nearly 11% lower than the quota for November.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,825-INR 3,975 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,850-INR 4,025 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 10-INR 20 at INR 3,960-INR 4,032 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Down INR 10-INR 20 at INR 3,740-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1854 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.3% at 15 cents per pound. Prices rose despite ample global availability. End
US$1 = INR 91.02
