MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Tuesday as profit-booking continued for the second consecutive day, analysts said. Prices of jeera rose following reports of a fall in acreage and because of steady demand, they said.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC fell 1.4% to INR 15,940 per 100 kg as profit booking at higher prices continued for the second consecutive day, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. However, the fall in prices is likely to be limited due to strong seasonal demand amid tight supplies due to lower production last year, the brokerage firm said. Prices are likely to remain supported in the near term as arrivals of the new crop are expected to be delayed. Arrivals of the spice are expected to remain delayed till Feb-Mar, while carry-forward stocks are at record-low levels compared with historical averages, keeping supplies tight, Kedia Advisory said in a note.

The most-active January contract of JEERA was up 1.3% at INR 21,120 per 100 kg due to a fall in acreage in the ongoing sowing season and consistent demand, SMC Global said. Weather-related delays and uneven rainfall continue to hinder sowing in the ongoing rabi season, which is likely to provide some support to prices in the near term, Kedia Advisory said. As of Monday, jeera acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producing regions, was down at 324,390 hectares from 376,956 hectares a year ago, data from the state agriculture department showed.

The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was down 2.2% at INR 9,908 per 100 kg due to profit-booking as prices remained over the INR 10,000 per 100 kg mark till Monday, analysts said. The fall in prices is likely to be capped due to reports of a fall in acreage in the ongoing rabi season and because of steady seasonal demand, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, coriander acreage fell to 102,947 hectares from 103,779 hectares a year ago. Farmers are reportedly shifting from sowing the spice to more profitable crops such as wheat and chana, the brokerage said.
