MUMBAI – Prices of maize and wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell on Tuesday due to weak demand, while prices in other key markets were steady, traders said. Prices of rice were steady in key spot markets across the country due to lack of fresh cues, they said. Prices of maize are expected to rise in the near term if arrivals fall, they said.

MAIZE prices in Indore fell by INR 35 per 100 kilograms to INR 1,800 per 100 kg due to low demand, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said. "Higher prices brought down demand," he said. Prices of maize are likely to rise by INR 100 per 100 kg if arrivals of the kharif crop fall, he said.

Maize prices in Davanagere, Karnataka, were unchanged at INR 1,900-INR 2,100 per 100 kg and arrivals in the market rose by 1,000 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals rose after the market was shut for the weekend and on Monday, he said. On Monday, the spot market was closed due to the death of a legislator from the area, he said.

WHEAT prices in Indore fell by INR 15 from the previous day to INR 2,715 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The fall in prices was driven by low demand in the market. Prices are likely to fluctuate by INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg in the short term, in accordance with a rise or fall in demand, he said.

Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,510-INR 2,540 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were also stable at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices of the grain in the wholesale market in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, remained steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices have been moving within a narrow range of about INR 10–INR 20 per 100 kg for a few weeks and are expected to remain range-bound in the near term, unless the government restarts the open-market sales scheme for wheat, he said.

The acreage of wheat across India stood at 27.6 million hectares as of Friday, up 6.6% from 25.8 million hectares in the corresponding period a year ago, according to a release from the agriculture ministry. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India.

Prices of major RICE varieties remained unchanged, traders said. In Vashi, prices of the 1401 and 1121 basmati varieties were steady at INR 7,200-INR 7,400 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said local trader Ravi Shankar. Prices are likely to remain steady in the near term, he said.

As of Friday, the acreage of rabi paddy was 1.2 million hectares, an increase of nearly 17% from 1.1 million hectares a year ago, according to the agriculture department.  End
