NEW DELHI – Rice stocks with Food Corp. of India as of Dec. 1 fell 7% month on month to 31.2 million tonnes, according to the corporation's data. The current rice stock is up over 11% on year and at a two-decade high for the beginning of December.

The current rice stocks are above the buffer norm of 10.25 million tonnes, comprising operational stock of 8.25 million tonnes and strategic reserve of 2 million tonnes.

Wheat stocks with FCI as of Dec. 1 were 29.1 million tonnes, down over 5on month, but up over 41% on year. The current wheat stocks are well above the buffer norm of 20.5 million tonnes, which includes an operational stock of 17.5 million tonnes and a strategic reserve of 3 million tonnes.

The government has suspended e-auctions of wheat under the open market sale scheme for 2025-26 from Dec. 10 due to weak sales. FCI had started wheat auctions for 2025-26 on Nov. 12 and since then, only two auctions have been held after it shifted to fortnightly auctions from weekly ones due to poor buying interest from millers and processors amid ample market supplies.

Despite the uncertainty, the market broadly expects the government to resume wheat auctions sometime in January. For 2025-26, the government has allocated 3.0 million tonnes of wheat to be sold under the open market sales scheme, unchanged from last year. FCI sells wheat to liquidate excess inventory and stabilise prices in the open market.

Total food grain stocks with FCI as of Dec. 1 were 60.3 million tonnes, up from 48.6 million tonnes a year ago. As of Nov. 1, food grain stocks with the agency were at 64.3 million tonnes, according to the data.  End
