Gujarat rabi acreage up 1% on year at 3.75 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Gujarat stood at 3.75 million hectares as of Monday, up 1% on year from 3.71 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's normal rabi acreage, which is the normal area of the last three years, is 4.61 million hectares, of which over 81% has been covered so far.

 

Wheat acreage in the state was up at 1.07 million hectares from 981,700 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown with maize was 115,533 hectares, up from 114,853 hectares a year ago. The total area under all cereal crops was 1.22 million hectares, up from 1.14 million hectares a year ago.

 

The area under chana rose to 709,669 hectares from 671,831 hectares, according to the report. The total area sown with all rabi pulses was 753,915 hectares, up from 735,007 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area under all oilseeds so far was 266,628 hectares, up from 241,762 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, mustard acreage rose to 265,681 hectares from 239,881 hectares.

 

Sugarcane acreage slipped to 113,721 hectares from 142,640 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown with tobacco rose to 127,474 hectares from 122,946 hectares. Cumin acreage fell to 324,390 hectares from 376,956 hectares, and the area under coriander was down at 102,947 hectares from 103,779 hectares a year ago.

 

The area under onion was up at 61,437 hectares from 59,743 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage of potato rose to 159,187 hectares from 143,527 hectares. Vegetable acreage was down at 140,081 hectares from 147,069 hectares a year ago. 

 

Rabi crops are sown between October and November, after the monsoon is over, and harvested between April and May. Wheat, barley, peas, gram or chana, and mustard are the major rabi crops grown in Gujarat.  End
