MUMBAI – Prices of mustard seed fell in Jaipur while prices of soybean rose in Ratlam. In other markets, prices of both the spices were steady, traders said. Groundnut prices were steady across key markets. Prices of soybean rose in Ratlam due to rise in demand from millers as edible oil imports have become costlier due to fall of the rupee against dollar, they said.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, fell INR 25 to INR 7,175-INR 7,200 per 100 kilograms due to higher arrivals, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country aggregated 250,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kilograms), up 10,000 bags from the previous day, according to GGN Research.

In Kota, mustard seed prices were INR 6,800 per 100 kg, same as the previous day, Mahesh Sameriya, a trader, said. Arrivals were at 5,000 bags, down 1,000 bags from the previous day, Sameriya said.

SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, rose INR 50 to INR 2,550-INR 4,750 per 100 kg on increased demand, Narendra Porwal, a local trader, said. Arrivals were at 11,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the same as the previous day, he said. With imports becoming costlier, millers are left with little choice but to procure domestic oilseeds for crushing, traders said.

According to Sandeep Bajoria, chief executive officer of the Sunvin Group, contracts for importing about 70,000 tonnes of crude soybean oil in December and January have been cancelled as prices of imported soyoil rose INR 2 per litre.

In Kota, prices of soybean were at INR 4,581 per 100 kg, unchanged from the previous day, according to Sameriya. Arrivals were at 28,000 bags, down 2,000 bags from the previous day, he said.

Prices of GROUNDNUT in Ratlam remained steady at INR 2,500-INR 5,200 per 100 kg, Porwal said. Arrivals were steady at 18,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), he said. Prices will start rising in the coming days as arrivals have begun to fall, traders said. Groundnut arrivals typically peak in October and November.

With prices of imported sunflower oil rising, demand from millers for groundnut is seen rising in January, said Ashok Virvani, a trader from Gujarat. Sunflower oil and groundnut oil are often used interchangeably, especially in general cooking, as both have high smoke points and neutral flavours. But arrivals of groundnut will also start falling now with the peak arrival season over, Virvani said.
