MUMBAI – Futures contracts of spices fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Monday due to profit-booking, analysts said. Prices of turmeric are likely to be supported in the near term due to fears of a fall in production and low carry-over stocks, they said. Prices of jeera were weighed down further by the release of stored stocks and prices of coriander also fell due to sluggish demand in spot markets, they said.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC fell 0.8% to INR 16,200 per 100 kg due to profit-booking as prices surged above INR 16,000 per 100 kg, said Amit Gupta, senior analyst, Kedia Advisory. Prices had risen due to below-normal arrivals and sustained domestic and export demand, Kedia Advisory said in a note. The fall in prices is likely to be limited due to fears of a fall in production because of excessive rainfall in key producing regions, the broking firm said. The presence of excessive moisture in the atmosphere has also hampered the preservation of the harvested and stored crop, it said.

Arrivals of the spice are expected to remain delayed till Feb-Mar, while carry-forward stocks are at record-low levels compared with historical averages, keeping supplies tight, Kedia Advisory said. International and domestic demand continues to be robust, with strong buying interest from Europe and the US, it said.

The most-active January contract of JEERA was down 0.6% at INR 20,980 per 100 kg due to profit-booking, Gupta said. Prices were also weighed down by the release of previous stock by market stakeholders at higher prices, analysts at SMC Global said. According to traders, there is sufficient carry-over stocks of the spice, the brokerage said. However, weather-related delays and uneven rainfall continue to hinder sowing in the ongoing rabi season, which is likely to provide some support to prices in the near term, Kedia Advisory said. In Gujarat, one of the key jeera-producing regions, acreage fell to 260,925 hectares from 262,115 hectares last year, data from the state agriculture ministry showed.

The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was down 0.7% at INR 10,170 per 100 kg due to profit-booking. Prices also fell tracking subdued demand in spot markets, analysts said. However, the fall is likely to be limited due to reports of low sowing interest in the ongoing rabi season and sustained wedding-season demand, SMC Global said.
