MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Maharashtra fell Friday as demand did not pick up at existing prices, traders said. Demand did not pick up even at significantly lower prices and is unlikely to increase this month, they said. In Uttar Pradesh, prices were largely steady.
Mills in Maharashtra cut prices by INR 10 per 100 kg on Friday due to sluggish demand even at lower rates, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are unlikely to increase as demand is weak amid higher availability, he said.
In Uttar Pradesh, mills kept prices largely steady, except for a few mills which cut prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. As only one or two mills cut prices, the average price of sugar remained largely unchanged from the previous day in the state, Gupta said.
Demand did not pick up even at lower prices, he said. Traders in the resale market of the state also cut prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg, Gupta said.
Market participants are of the view that prices in Uttar Pradesh would be range-bound as the sales quota allocation for the state is lower, but as demand was sluggish, mills cut prices, Gupta said. The Centre has allocated a sales quota of 656,591 tonnes for Uttar Pradesh, which is nearly 11% lower than the previous month.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,825-INR 4,030 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 30 at INR 3,980-INR 4,052 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Down INR 30 at INR 3,780-INR 3,850 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1803 IST, price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 1.6% at 15.09 cents per pound. Prices rose despite ample global availability. End
US$1 = INR 90.41
