MUMBAI – Mustard seed and soybean prices rose Friday in Kota, Rajasthan, but remained steady in other key markets, traders said. Prices of soybean rose in one key market due to higher miller demand for domestic oilseeds as imports of edible oils became costlier due to depreciation of the rupee against dollar, they said. Groundnut prices were steady across key markets.

MUSTARD seed prices were unchanged in Jaipur, Rajasthan, at INR 7,200-INR 7,225 per 100 kilograms. Arrivals of mustard seed across the country totalled 240,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kilograms), same as the previous day, according to GGN Research.

In Kota, mustard seed prices rose INR 100 from the previous day to INR 6,800 per 100 kg, Mahesh Sameriya, a trader, said. Arrivals were at 5,000 bags, down 1,000 bags from the previous day, Gupta said.

SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, held steady at INR 2,500-INR 4,700 per 100 kg as demand remained subdued, Narendra Porwal, a local trader, said. Arrivals were at 11,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the same as the previous day, he said.

Prices of soybean in Kota rose INR 60 to INR 4,581 per 100 kg from the previous day as demand from millers increased, said Sameriya. Arrivals were at 30,000 bags, up 10,000 bags from the previous days. With imports becoming costlier, millers are left with little choice but to procure domestic oilseeds for crushing, traders said. The rupee, which has been sliding for some time now, hit a new all-time low of 90.5600 a dollar Friday. According to Sandeep Bajoria, chief executive officer of the Sunvin Group, contracts for about 70,000 tonnes of crude soybean oil for December and January have been cancelled as prices of imported soyoil rose INR 2 per litre.

Prices of GROUNDNUT in Ratlam remained steady at INR 2,500-INR 5,200 per 100 kg, Porwal said. Arrivals were steady at 18,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), he said. Prices will start rising in the coming days as arrivals have begun to fall, traders said. Groundnut arrivals typically peak in October and November.

With prices of imported sunflower oil moving up, millers' demand for groundnut is seen rising in January, said Ashok Virvani, a trader from Gujarat. Sunflower oil and groundnut oil are often used interchangeably, especially in general cooking, as both have high smoke points and neutral flavours. But arrivals of groundnut will also start falling now with peak arrival season over, Virvani said.
