NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Friday. Turmeric prices were up on good seasonal demand amid tight supply, analysts said. Jeera and coriander prices rose on reduced sowing coverage and steady buying interest, they added.
At 1658 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC rose 3% to INR 16,360 per 100 kg, taking cues of good seasonal demand amidst supply tightness based on the weaker crop last year, SMC Global Securities said in a note. Turmeric prices are likely to remain high in the near future, it added.
Unfavourable weather is also supporting turmeric prices as concern about damage to standing and harvested crops increases. Although heavy rainfall has subsided in key turmeric-producing regions in south India such as Tamil Nadu, the lack of dry weather has triggered an outbreak of disease in the standing crop, Kedia Advisory said. The presence of excessive moisture in the atmosphere has also hampered the preservation of harvested and stored crop, it said.
The most-active January contract of JEERA rose 0.2% to INR 21,140 per 100 kg, supported by reduced sowing coverage and steady buying interest, SMC Global said in a note. However, traders caution that the presence of adequate carry-over stocks with market participants may cap the upside and keep the overall market tone restrained.
The most-active December contract of CORIANDER was up 0.2% at INR 10,228 per 100 kg supported by lower sowing interest and steady demand, analysts said. Total sowing coverage is likely to remain down this year as farmers are shifting to more profitable crops such as wheat and chana, traders said.
