MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were steady while prices of tur showed a mixed trend in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of tur were steady in some markets and rose in others due to lower-than-expected arrivals of the new kharif crop from Karnataka, they said. Prices of chana remained unchanged due to tepid market activity, while prices of masur were flat as demand was low and supply was on par, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,750 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices are unchanged due to low market activity, he said. Imports of Australian chana and the government offloading its own stock in the market are keeping supply comfortable, dampening sentiment, he said. Prices are likely to fall by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg in the near term as more shipments of Australian chana are expected to arrive in India before the year-end, he said.

The sowing of rabi chana in Madhya Pradesh is around 90% complete, Jain said. The overall acreage is likely to remain largely the same as last year's, he said. "There could be a fall by a small percentage, but mostly we see the same area (as last year)," he said. Though some farmers in the state have moved to other crops such as wheat and maize for better returns, a rise in chana acreage in states such as Gujarat is likely to make up for the shortfall, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,550-INR 5,575 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,175-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices have stabilised after rising by INR 100-INR 300 per 100 kg in the last few days, he said. Prices had risen due to lower-than-expected arrivals of the freshly harvested tur crop from Karnataka, he said.

Currently, arrivals of the new crop from the top-producing state are lower than the levels in the same period last year, he said. "There is still time for new arrivals to begin in full swing and that is raising prices," he said. Reports of lower production in Karnataka due to damage from rainfall in September and October are also supporting prices, he said. "Millers don't have enough tur left for processing so they want to buy the new crop, but enough arrivals are not there," he said. In Maharashtra, another top producer of the legume, arrivals are unlikely to begin in full swing till Jan. 15–20, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 from Thursday to INR 7,500-INR 7,600 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,950 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices are steady as demand and supply are both low and equally matched, he said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound till arrivals of the new rabi masur crop begin, he said. Though the sowing of rabi masur is progressing well, Jain expects a slight drop in overall acreage due to farmers shifting to more lucrative crops, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,700–INR 6,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 7,000–INR 8,000 per 100 kg.  End
