MUMBAI - Prices of wheat showed a mixed trend while those of maize and rice remained steady in key spot markets Friday, traders said. Wheat prices edged up in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on slightly higher demand but were unchanged elsewhere, they said. Maize prices were flat amid a lack of fresh cues, and rice held steady due to tepid market activity, they added.
WHEAT prices in Indore rose by INR 15 from Thursday to INR 2,730 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices rose due to a slight rise in demand but the overall market is still largely inactive, he said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term on lack of fresh cues, he said.
Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, held steady at INR 2,500-INR 2,575 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 2,000 bags to 5,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. The number of arrivals in the market on any given day is "dependent on the farmers," Mehta added.
Prices of the grain in the wholesale market of Vashi, Navi Mumbai, remained steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices have been fluctuating only by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg for a while now, and are likely to remain range-bound in the short term unless the government announces anything on open-market sales scheme for wheat, or any other policy, he said.
The government suspended e-auctions of wheat under the open market sale scheme for 2025-26 from Wednesday, officials from the Food Corp. of India told Informist earlier this week. In its previous wheat auctions, the FCI had barely sold 40% of its offering. However, this did not have any impact on spot market prices, Kochar said. "Private stocks are enough to meet demand," he said.
On the sowing front, the acreage under rabi wheat is progressing well, Kochar said. Wheat acreage across the country is likely to increase 5% on year as some farmers have shifted to wheat for its "better returns" from other crops, he said. "...Comparing with other crop they are getting better returns," he said.
MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 1,835 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are unchanged as demand is on a par with supply, he said. The sowing of rabi maize is also progressing well and is expected to be 5% higher than last year's levels, he said. In Davanagere, Karnataka, prices of maize remained unchanged at INR 1,900-2,100 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals in Davanagere were unchanged at 2,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said.
Prices of major varieties of RICE were unchanged, traders said. In Vashi, prices of the basmati 1401 and 1121 varieties remained stable at INR 7,100-INR 7,300 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. "The overall rice market is very lukewarm, the only demand happening is in basmati rice and there too, it is only hand-to-mouth purchases," he said. A comfortable supply of rice is keeping market activity tepid, he said.
The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said local trader Ravi Shankar. End
