Andhra Pradesh rabi acreage dn 10% YoY at 657,000 ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – Farmers in Andhra Pradesh have sown rabi crops across 657,000 hectares as of Wednesday, down over 10% on year from 733,000 hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture government. Of the targetted area of 1.94 million hectares for the ongoing rabi season, nearly 34% has been covered so far, the data showed.
Chana acreage in the state slipped to 226,000 hectares from 259,000 hectares a year ago, according to the data. The area sown with urad fell to 70,000 hectares from 79,000 hectares, while moong acreage rose to 15,000 hectares from 13,000 hectares a year ago. The total area under all pulses so far was 344,000 hectares, down from 433,000 hectares a year ago.
The area sown with paddy was up at 133,000 hectares from 112,000 hectares a year ago, the data showed. Maize acreage rose to 90,000 hectares from 53,000 hectares. The area under jowar fell to 30,000 hectares from 39,000 hectares a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds fell to 21,000 hectares from 30,000 hectares a year ago, according to the data. Under oilseeds, the acreage of groundnut was down at 17,000 hectares from 25,000 hectares a year ago.
Tobacco acreage in the state so far fell to 37,000 hectares from 64,000 hectares a year ago.
Rabi paddy is in the 'nursery to transplantation' stage, according to the report. Jowar and tobacco are in the vegetative stage. Chana and urad are in the 'planting to emergence and vegetative' stage, as per the report.
Kharif paddy, jowar, bajra, ragi, castor, and groundnut are at the harvesting stage, the report said. Tur is at the pod development stage, while cotton is at the third picking stage. Sugarcane is at the cane development stage.
From Oct. 1 to Dec. 10, the state has recorded 344 millimetres of rainfall during the ongoing northeast monsoon season, which is 25.9% above the normal for the period, the report showed. The water level in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh was 83.75% of the live storage capacity as of Friday, compared to 77.75% a year ago, according to the state's water resources department. End
