NEW DELHI – India and the US had productive discussions for the proposed bilateral trade agreement during Deputy US Trade Representative Rick Switzer's visit to India and the two sides have agreed to contine the "purposeful" and "positive" engagements, a commerce ministry official said. During the visit, Switzer met Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Switzer's visit concluded on Thursday. "The visit served as an opportunity for both sides to have productive exchanges on a wide gamut of items related to India-US trade and economic ties, including the ongoing negotiations for a mutually beneficial India-US bilateral trade agreement," the official said. "Both sides agreed to continue the current purposeful and positive engagements."

This was the second visit by a US team to New Delhi after Washington imposed 50% tariff on Indian goods in August. While India and the US had set the target to conclude a tranche of the agreement by the fall of 2025, it is yet to be seen if an announcement is made this month. Goyal has reiterated several times that his team would not negotiate any trade deal under the pressure of a timeline.

Indian exporters hope for a timely conclusion as they expect that the tariffs will be lowered under the trade deal. With exports worth $86.5 billion to the US, the nation was India's top export destination in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). But after the tariff levy in August, India's exports to the US have fallen in the two successive months, according to latest available data.  End
