MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell substantially in key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra on Thursday due to subdued demand and ample stocks, traders said. Demand did not pick up even at significantly lower rates and is unlikely to increase this month, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 30 per 100 kg as demand did not increase at rates set earlier, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. There was limited buying even at current prices, he added. Traders in the resales market of the state also cut prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg, Gupta said. Prices fell by around INR 130-INR 140 per 100 kg during this month, he said.

Market participants were of the view that prices in Uttar Pradesh would be range-bound as the sales quota allocation for the state was lower, however, as demand was sluggish, mills cut prices, Gupta said. The Centre has allocated a sales quota of 656,591 tonnes for Uttar Pradesh, which is nearly 11% lower than a month ago.

In Maharashtra, too, mills cut prices by INR 60-INR 70 per 100 kg due to poor demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are unlikely to increase, as demand is weak amid higher availability, he said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 30 at INR 3,800-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 30 at INR 3,825-INR 4,030 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 60-INR 70 at INR 3,900-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Down INR 60-inr 70 at INR 3,800-INR 3,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 2030 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.2% at 14.94 cents per pound. Prices rose despite ample global availability.  End

US$1 = INR 90.36
