NEW DELHI – The agriculture ministry Wednesday approved the purchase of 967,000 tonnes of tur in Karnataka at the minimum support price under the price support scheme for the kharif marketing season 2025-26 (Oct-Sept), the India Pulses and Grains Association said Thursday. Trade sources said the state has been given immediate approval to start procurement of tur. The procurement, they said, will continue for 90 days.
"It seems like the approvals this time are being accorded state by state rather than in one go," a senior government official said. Generally, the Centre signs off on the overall allocation once the states submit detailed estimates of their procurement volumes.
The central government has been pushing to advance the procurement of tur under its price support mechanism to as early as January as it aims to ramp up purchases amid low market prices and rebuild buffer stocks ahead of peak arrivals, two government officials had recently told Informist. According to them, the delay was because several states were yet to communicate their requirements. The list included Karnataka on Dec. 4, when Informist had published the report. Other major tur-producing states such as Maharashtra and Gujarat are still to give their procurement estimates.
The procurement will be undertaken by National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. and National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd., central agencies that execute purchases under the price support scheme.
Last year, tur procurement--originally scheduled to begin in January--was delayed till March as several states, particularly Karnataka, deferred operations for local policy decisions such as the announcement of a bonus. The late start limited the government's purchases and tur procurement had to be wound up with less than 600,000 tonnes, far lower than the sanctioned quantity of 1.3 million tonnes. Officials expect significantly higher procurement this year, provided operations begin on time.
The agriculture ministry has pegged tur production this year at around 3.6 million tonnes, close to last year's revised estimate. End
