NEW DELHI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs in the country fell 2.1% from the previous week to 155.226 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. The level accounted for 84.6% of the total live storage capacity, the Central Water Commission said. The water level was up 7.4% from a year ago and 22.2% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 15.912 billion cubic metres, over 80% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was over 52% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 16.924 billion cubic metres, nearly 78% of the total live storage capacity and higher than over 71% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 35.099 billion cubic metres, over 92% of the total live storage capacity, against nearly 90% last year. The region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 42.008 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, accounting for over 86% of the total live storage capacity, compared with around 81% a year ago.

 

The water level in the southern region was 45.282 billion cubic metres, almost 82% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was 82% of the total live storage capacity.

 

Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 160 reported more than 80% of normal storage and six reported 80% or below of normal storage. Of these six, none had storage below 50% of the normal. During the week ended Wednesday, India received 1.7 millimetres of rainfall, 55?low the normal of 3.7 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
