MUMBAI - Chana prices remained range-bound Thursday owing to subdued buying but tur extended gains after Karnataka's decision to procure the crop with a bonus above the minimum support price lifted sentiment, traders said. Masur stayed stable as government sales continued to meet market demand, they added.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,750 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices are steady amid some demand for the legume, but the demand is not sufficient to lift prices, he said. "Millers and traders are buying in little quantities... as and when needed," Mangal said. Prices are range-bound and are likely to remain so in the near term due to comfortable supplies of the legume, he said. The continuing imports of chana from Australia are also likely to keep prices from rising, he said. Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,575-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, traders said.

Prices of old TUR in Solapur, Maharashtra, were up INR 150 from Wednesday at INR 6,200-INR 6,950 per 100 kg, said Rahula Srinivas, a local trader. Seven or eight trucks carrying 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each arrived at the market, he said.

Meanwhile, prices of new tur also rose INR 150 from Wednesday to INR 6,700-INR 7,450 per 100 kg, Srinivas said. Prices rose after the Karnataka government's announcement of procurement of tur at a bonus over and above the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg, he said.

Currently, all new arrivals of kharif tur are coming from Karnataka, which is the top producer of the legume in the country, he said. Prices are likely to keep rising in the near term, he said. "Farmers want mandi prices to reach the level of the minimum support price of INR 8,000, they don't want anything less than that, so prices could keep rising till it reaches that (mark)," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose INR 100 from the previous day to INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,950–INR 6,000 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Though there are no arrivals of the legume in the market, the demand is being met through government stocks, he said. The government has been offloading its stock of masur in small quantities to keep the market stable, he said. Prices are likely to remain steady in the near term, he added.

Meanwhile, the rabi sowing of masur is progressing well and is likely to meet last year's level, Mangal said. "Farmers know most of their crop will be bought by the government, so they have sown masur nicely this year as well," he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,700–INR 6,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 7,000–INR 8,000 per 100 kg.  End
