MUMBAI – Prices of maize, wheat, and rice were steady in key spot markets across the country on Wednesday due to lack of fresh cues, traders said. Wheat prices are expected to remain steady till the government issues any further notice on the state of open market sales of wheat, they said.
Prices of WHEAT in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, remained steady at INR 2,715 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kohar, a local trader. Prices of the grain in the wholesale market of Vashi, Navi Mumbai, remained steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.
Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were largely steady at INR 2,500-INR 2,575 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals rose by 1,000 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). "There is no major reason for the rise in arrivals, it all depends upon the farmers," he said.
There is no effect of the suspension of open market sales on wheat prices and rates are likely to remain steady, Mehta said. "There will be no effect on the wheat prices as private stocks are enough to meet the demand," Kochar said. The government suspended e-auctions of wheat under the open market sale scheme for 2025-26 from Wednesday, officials from Food Corp. of India told Informist on Monday. Food Corp. of India had started wheat auctions for 2025–26 on Nov. 12, and since then, only two auctions have been held after it shifted to fortnightly auctions from weekly ones due to weak sales and poor buying interest from millers and processors amid ample market supplies.
MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 1,850 per 100 kilograms, Kochar said. Similarly, prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were largely steady at INR 2,000-INR 2,050 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were also unchanged at 2,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said. Prices are steady amid tepid market activity, Shiva Kumar said.
Prices of major varieties of RICE were also steady, traders said. In Vashi, prices of the basmati 1401 and 1121 varieties remained stable at INR 7,100-INR 7,300 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said.
The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, remained unchanged at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Monday warned of tariffs against rice imports from India amid the ongoing trade talks between New Delhi and Washington. Trump hinted that he would impose tariffs on some agricultural imports, saying he would "take care" of "dumping of Indian rice into the US". However, this is unlikely to affect exporters. Traders said the tariff hike was not a "major concern" as the US market is the least price-elastic, with its size being very small compared to India's total shipments of the grain, according to various media reports.
