MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera rose, while those of coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. Prices of turmeric rose as unfavourable weather in key south Indian states raised concerns of crop damage, analysts said. Prices of jeera were supported by disruptions in the ongoing sowing season and fears of a fall in overall acreage, they said. Prices of coriander fell due to sluggish demand in spot markets, they said.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC rose 4.3% to INR 15,422 per 100 kg as unfavourable weather has raised concerns about damage to both the standing and harvested crop. Although heavy rainfall has subsided in key producing regions in South India, such as Tamil Nadu, the lack of dry weather has triggered a disease outbreak in the standing crop, Kedia Advisory said. The presence of excessive moisture in the atmosphere has also hampered the preservation of the harvested and stored crop, it said.

Prices are also supported by a rise in export demand for the spice, analysts said. India's turmeric exports rose 4% on year to 96,680 tonnes in Apr-Sept, according to data released by the Spices Board of India Friday.

The most-active January contract of JEERA was up 1.2% at INR 21,250 per 100 kg as weather-related delays and uneven rainfall continue to hinder sowing, keeping prices firm, Kedia Advisory said. In Gujarat, one of the key jeera-producing regions, acreage fell to 260,925 hectares from 262,115 hectares last year, data from the state agriculture ministry showed. Arrivals of the spice at Unjha in Gujarat remained low, and steady demand for good-quality arrivals continues to support prices, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active December contract of CORIANDER was down 0.3% at INR 10,512 per 100 kg due to weak demand in spot markets, analysts said. However, the fall is likely to be limited due to reports of a fall in sowing interest and sustained wedding-season demand, SMC Global said. Total coriander acreage is likely to remain low this year as farmers are reportedly shifting to more profitable crops such as chana and wheat, the brokerage said.
