Maharashtra rabi acreage down 7% on yr at 4.33 mln ha as on Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of rabi crops in Maharashtra reached 4.33 million hectares as on Monday, down nearly 7% from 4.64 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal rabi acreage in the state, which is the average area sown during the last five years, is 5.78 million hectares.  

 

The area under wheat rose to 743,423 hectares from 731,991 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under jowar slipped to 1.11 million hectares from 1.32 million hectares, while the area sown with maize rose to 349,835 from 296,283 hectares. 

 

Chana acreage was 2 million hectares, down from 2.2 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area under all pulses fell to 2.1 million hectares from 2.2 million hectares a year ago. 

 

The total area sown with all oilseeds was 30,061 hectares, down from 40,233 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of safflower fell to 21,647 hectares from 26,873 hectares. 

 

Rabi crops in the state are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April. Besides chana, other major rabi crops grown in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard, and peas.

 

The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 89.3% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 82.5% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
