MUMBAI – The US Department of Agriculture has raised its global oilseed production estimate for 2025–26 (May-Apr) to 690.26 million tonnes from 688.01 million tonnes projected in November, it said in its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report for December. The rise in production is driven by higher output of rapeseed, peanut, and soybean, which is partially offset by lower sunflowerseed output, the department said.
Global production of rapeseed is seen up 3 million tonnes, with higher production in Canada, Australia, and Russia. Among these countries, the highest increase is for Canada, where production is estimated to rise by 2 million tonnes to a record 22 million tonnes. Sunflowerseed production is estimated to fall by 2.5 million tonnes due to lower harvests in Ukraine and Russia.
Production of oilseeds in countries excluding the US is estimated at 564.47 million tonnes, up from 562.26 million tonnes seen in November. The output of oilseeds in the US in 2025-26 is projected to rise marginally to 125.79 million tonnes from 125.75 million seen last month.
Global ending stocks of oilseeds in 2025-26 are pegged at 143.60 million tonnes, up from 142.26 million tonnes projected last month, according to the report.
The USDA has also raised its global soybean production forecast by 800,000 tonnes to 422.5 million tonnes due to higher output in Russia and India, which is partially offset by lower production in Canada and Ukraine, the department said. The estimate for soybean production in the US is unchanged at 115.75 million tonnes.
The USDA has pegged global soybean exports in 2025-26 at 187.70 million tonnes, down from 187.97 million tonnes forecast in November due to lower shipments from Ukraine and Benin. Global soybean imports in 2025-26 are projected at 186.14 million tonnes, down from the 186.41 million tonnes projection last month due to a fall in imports by Japan, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, which have been partially offset by a rise in Brazil's imports.
Global ending stocks of soybean are pegged at 122.37 million tonnes, up from 121.99 million tonnes forecast in November, mainly due to an increase in ending stocks in Russia and Brazil. Global beginning stocks for 2025-26 are estimated at 123.24 million tonnes, marginally down from 123.34 million tonnes seen in November, the report said.
The USDA estimates global soybean meal output in 2025-26 at 286.64 million tonnes, up slightly from 286.42 million tonnes seen the previous month. Soybean meal is a derivative of soybean, manufactured by crushing oilseeds, and is mainly used in producing poultry feed. Production of soybean meal in India in 2025-26 is projected at 7.42 million tonnes, up slightly from 7.24 million tonnes estimated in November. India is one of the largest importers of soy oil and an exporter of soybean meal.
The projection for global vegetable oil production has been lowered to 233.29 million tonnes from 234.40 million tonnes estimated in November. End
