Gujarat rabi acreage up 21% on year at 3.06 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of rabi crops in Gujarat progressed to 3.06 million hectares as of Monday, up nearly 21% on year from 2.54 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture government. Of the state's normal rabi crop acreage of 4.61 million hectares, which is the average of the past three years, over 66% has been covered so far.

 

Wheat acreage in the state rose to 859,200 hectares from 609,132 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize was also up at 100,187 hectares from 93,545 hectares last year. The acreage under all cereal crops was 979,355 hectares, up from 719,116 hectares a year ago.

 

The area sown under chana was 589,773 hectares, up from 436,219 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The total acreage under all pulses rose to 630,713 hectares from 489,483 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area under all oilseeds so far was 231,675 hectares, up from 191,797 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under mustard rose to 230,891 hectares from 189,916 hectares a year ago.

 

Sugarcane acreage fell to 98,256 hectares from 117,212 hectares last year, while the area sown under tobacco was up at 108,323 hectares from 86,336 hectares a year ago. The area sown under cumin slipped to 260,925 hectares from 262,115 hectares last year, the report showed. Coriander acreage was up at 75,361 hectares from 62,376 hectares a year ago.

 

The area sown under onion rose to 49,893 hectares from 44,298 hectares a year ago, and that of potato also rose to 147,721 hectares from 125,045 hectares last year. The acreage under vegetables was up at 109,907 hectares from 97,948 hectares last year, according to the report.

 

Rabi crops are sown between October and November, after the monsoon is over, and harvested between April and May. Wheat, barley, peas, gram or chana, and mustard are the major rabi crops grown in Gujarat.  End
