MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell significantly in key markets of Uttar Pradesh Monday as mills were under pressure to offload stocks, but demand remained poor. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady as demand did not pick up, said traders.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 50-INR 60 per 100 kg as they were unable to offload stocks at the earlier price levels, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. "There was some demand at the lower prices today (Monday)," Gupta said.

During this month, prices have fallen by over INR 100 per 100 kg, as there was poor demand from bulk consumers of sugar such as ice-cream and cold drink manufacturers, he said. Traders in the resales markets of Uttar Pradesh also cut prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg on Monday due to lower uptake, he said.

Market participants were of the view that prices in Uttar Pradesh would be range-bound as the sales quota allocation for the state was lower, however, as demand was sluggish mills cut prices, Gupta said. The Centre has allocated a sales quota of 656,591 tonnes for Uttar Pradesh, which is nearly 11% lower than a month ago.

Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady Monday, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, said. Prices are unlikely to increase, as demand is weak amid higher availability, he said.

The crushing season is underway, so traders are also not keeping stocks in the pipeline, and there will be no shortage throughout the month, Kuvadia said. Demand is unlikely to increase as ice-cream and cold drink consumption is low during the winter season.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 50-INR 60 at INR 3,800-INR 3,900 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 50-INR 60 at INR 3,820-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,962-INR 4,072 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,800-INR  per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1946 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.4% at 14.86 cents per pound. Prices rose despite ample global availability.  End
