MUMBAI – The Cost of home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals fell 13% each on year in November, according to CRISIL Intelligence. A fall in the prices of vegetables and pulses led to a decline in the cost of vegetarian meals, and a lower broiler price led to a decline in the cost of non-vegetarian meals.
The average cost of a vegetarian thali in November was INR 28.4, while that of a non-vegetarian thali was INR 53.8 in November, Crisil said in a release on Friday.
The price of kitchen staple onion fell 53% on year in November due to higher stocks from the previous rabi season, coupled with subdued exports. Tomato prices declined 17% on-year on the back of higher supplies, and potato prices fell 29% on-year on a high base, the report said.
Pulse prices also fell by 17% due to higher stocks. Imports of chana, urad and yellow peas were higher, the report said. Chana imports rose by 9 times on-year in fiscal 2025, according to the report.
Vegetable oil prices surged 6% on-year due to higher demand during the festival season. Additionally, a 6% on-year increase in prices of liquefied petroleum gas cylinders limited the decline in the overall cost of thalis, CRISIL Intelligence said.
The cost of a non-vegetarian thali fell due to a 12% on-year drop in broiler prices, which account for 50% of the cost. Lower prices of vegetables and pulses also contributed to the decline, according to the report.
On a monthly basis, the cost of a vegetarian thali rose 2%, while that of a non-vegetarian thali declined 1% in November. Potato and tomato prices rose 5% and 14% on month, respectively, leading to a rise in the overall cost of the vegetarian thalis, while the prices of other commodities remained largely stable, the report said.
The cost of a non-vegetarian thali declined on month on account of a 5?ll in broiler prices amid oversupply in the market, according to the report.
Crisil calculates the average cost of preparing a thali based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east, and west India. End
US$1 = INR 90.07
